Greta Gerwig’s Barbie en Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer voeren de Golden Globes nominaties aan van begin volgend jaar. De twee films wiens onwaarschijnlijke alliantie de bioscoop box office deze de zomer een dramatische boost gaf.
De pastelkleurige satire van Greta Gerwig is genomineerd voor negen prijzen, waaronder film (in de categorie ‘komedie of musical’), scenario, regisseur, hoofdrolspeelster voor Margot Robbie, bijrol voor Ryan Gosling – evenals drie afzonderlijke inzendingen in de categorie originele liedjes.
Dit maakt Barbie tot de op één na meest genomineerde film ooit bij de Globes, gelijk aan Cabaret uit 1972 en de tweede na Nashville, die elf nominaties verzamelde.
Ook voor tv nomineren de Globes, waar Succession’s laatste seizoen met recht werd geëerd. Meerdere castleden scoorden individuele acteernominaties, naast één voor de beste dramaserie, met een totaal van negen nominaties.
Toch is er altijd wat op en aan te merken. De organisatie achter de Golden Globes was in opspraak de laatste jaren vanwege hun gebrek aan inclusiviteit en ‘aparte praktijken’. Ze beloofden beterschap met meer leden en een ‘grote schoonmaak’.
De Golden Globes proberen met de aankomende uitreiking een einde te maken aan de jarenlange controverse. De prijsuitreiking lag in 2021 onder vuur nadat de Los Angeles Times berichtte over de Hollywood Foreign Press Association, de inmiddels opgeheven organisatie van journalisten die toezicht hield op de Globes.
Deze had geen zwarte leden en sommige leden hadden zich schuldig gemaakt aan twijfelachtige financiële praktijken en potentiële leden bedreigd. NBC zond de Globes in 2023 uit op basis van een contract van een jaar, en de komende ceremonie zal worden uitgezonden op CBS. De Globes hebben sindsdien gewerkt om de diversiteit van hun stemorgaan te vergroten. In oktober meldde vakblad Variety dat de stemgroep 300 leden had bereikt, van wie 47 procent vrouw is en 60 procent raciaal en etnisch divers.
